Zhang Xuemang, Deputy Mayor of Wuhan City, led a delegation of 8 people to visit Christchurch on 12 April 2005. The delegation visited a few farms and some other places of interest, and held useful discussions with relevant parties regarding joint agricultural researches and trade between the two cities. The delegation stayed in Christchurch for two days and was well greeted with great hospitality by Christchurch City Council, Canterbury Development Corporation, and Hubei NZ Association. |

Larry Podmore, Science & Technology Manager from Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC), and Eugene Feng, Project manager – Asia, visited Wuhan and Beijing, P R China from late March to early April 2005. During their visit in Wuhan, Larry and Eugene visited several municipal departments including Wuhan Economic Commission, Wuhan Municipal Science & Technology Bureau and Wuhan Education Bureau. The talks they had with Wuhan officials were constructive and promising. A Memorandum was signed between CDC and Wuhan Municipal Centre of International Exchange & Service affiliated to Wuhan Foreign Affairs Office. Larry also passed to Mayor Li Xiansheng a letter from Mayor Garry Moore in which Mayor Moore propose to start more cooperation between the two cities. In his reply Mayor Li extended his heartfelt greetings and goodwill to Mayor Moore and Christchurch people, and expressed his willingness and readiness to have more cooperation. Larry and Eugene also visited College of Computer Science & Technology of Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST), Tongji Medical College of HUST and Venture Capital of HUST, Chinese Antarctic Centre of Surveying & Mapping in Wuhan University, Underground Water Laboratory in College of Environmental Studies of China University of Geosciences, and Huazhong Agricultural University. The meetings led to a series of discussions about inter-city collaboration in different science and technology areas and in commercialization of quality researches. In their visits to Orient Lucky Horse and Wuhan Institute of Horticulture & Landscape Design, Larry and Eugene found a keen interest from the Wuhan enterprises. Early April, Larry and Eugene participated the Global IPv6 Forum in Beijing and were received with great distinction. They also visited Internet Society of China, China CERNET and the IPv6 Testbed in Beijing University of Posts & Telecommunications. On 10 April 2005, James Saruchera, ICT Project Leader from CDC arrived in Wuhan and had a two-day visit in Hongshan District and Jiangxia District. James and Eugene visited several key ICT enterprises and identified some possible areas for future cooperation.

In late February 2005, a group of 26 principals from Wuhan secondary schools came to Christchurch College of Education (CCE) for a 4-week training on the New Zealand Education system and secondary education administration. During the four weeks, CCE arranged for some local secondary principals to lecture to the training class and to meet the Wuhan principals for sharing each other experience in the administration and for discussions on the secondary education improvement and renovation. The group also visited some local secondary schools and had a better understanding of New Zealand education. The Wuhan principals felt that they had had a worthwhile time and they would apply in their situations in China what they had learned during their training in CCE. The group had also made some field trips to some other places during their stay in New Zealand. Mr Chen Mingming, Ambassador of P R China in New Zealand, came in person to Christchurch from Wellington on 19 March 2005 to congratulate the group for their successful completion of the training.

On 14 March 2005, a free information session was held on the 97th Chinese Export Commodities Fair at 120 Withells Road, Avonhead, Christchurch. The Fair is to take place in Guanzhou, P R China in April 2005. The information session was co-organized by Chinese Entrepreneur Association of New Zealand, Canterbury Development Corporation, and Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce. Mr Zheng Zhihai, Economic & Commercial Counsellor of the Embassy of the P R China in New Zealand, Mr Ren Xiangdong, Vice Secretary-General for the Chinese Export Commodities Fair made their presence in the session. Lianne Dalziel, Labour MP representing Christchurch East, delivered a brilliant speech. Larry Podmore, Science & Technology Manager of Canterbury Development Corporation, elaborated on the importance of New Zealand trade ties with P R China, and encouraged Kiwi entrepreneurs to have more engagement with their Chinese counterparts. About 200 local entrepreneurs participated in the session. Local media, English and Chinese, also provided an enthusiastic coverage for the event. 10 Jan 2005 University of Canterbury Professor Dr. Malcolm Shore visited Wuhan late last year on a University delegation. Dr Shaw has since been made a Guest Professor at Wuhan University in his specialist field of computer security, and is working with his counterparts in Wuhan to design a course in e-security, cryptography, and network security. |

05 Nov 2004 A group consisting of the First Vice president Mr Chen Zhaofang, and the Dean for the school of international students education Mr Lu Jiangbin is to visit the Univerity of Canterbury in early November with the aim of strengthening the existing relationship between the two Universities. The two Universities have previously signed memorandums of understaning and cooperation in a number of areas, including that of Antarctic research, and science and technology research. |

05 Nov 2004 A group of 19 people from Wuhan arrives today to spend four weeks studying agriculture and forestry in New Zealand. They will first spend nine days with Lincoln University, where they will gain a broad overview of livestock and crop farming in New Zealand, look at policies and current developments around environmental management in agriculture, and visit a variety of farms and the Clandeboye dairy plant near Timaru. The second two weeks of the programme will be spent at the University of Canterbury, focussing on forestry, biosecurity and biosafety, and international trade. The programme at Canterbury will take advantage of the resources available at the university’s New Zealand School of Forestry and the New Zealand Institute of Gene Ecology. |

01 Nov 2004 New Zealand Trade and Enterprise national business incubator manager Richard White visited Wuhan last week, in order to assess the opportunities around incubator exchange. Mr White visited a number of incubators and small businesses, which he said was interesting and enjoyable, citing specific opportunities in the areas of incubator manager exchange, as well as establishing training programmes for incubator managers, young entrepreneurs, and business graduates.

21 Oct 2004 Wuhan's Mayor Li Xiansheng visited Christchurch from 21-23 October to strengthen the relationship between Wuhan and Christchurch. Mayor Li attended a banquet hosted by Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore on the first evening, then the two Mayors had a meeting and press conference the following morning. |
