Canterbury Jockey Club (CJC) participated in the 4th China Wuhan International Equestrian Festival during 01 through 05 October 2006. The 10-strong CJC Delegation was headed by George Ritchie, Chairman of CJC, Tim Mills, CEO of CJC and some other Board members and their spouses, Murray Acklin, former Director of NZ Racing Board representing thoroughbred Racing. Two jockeys from CJC participated in the racing, and Terry Mosley came out second and third in two races. There was a CJC Cup presented to one of the races, the first ever in the history of the Festival. Murray Acklin also delivered a speech on the Opening Ceremony. Garry Moore, Mayor of Christchurch, sent a recorded speech to greet the people of Wuhan and congratulate the 4th China Wuhan International Equestrian Festival. In his speech, Garry Moore pointed out: ‘This cooperation (i.e. the cooperation between CJC and OLH) is based upon the friendship between the people of Wuhan and the people of Christchurch. It is my hope that people in both cities will enjoy this cooperation and it will lead to more visits and exchanges.’ During the Festival, OLH and Wuhan Municipality have sponsored the Christchurch Cityscape Photography Exhibition organized by Mr Gong Zesheng, Director of Wuhan Popular Arts Museum. Canterbury Jockey Club (CJC) formalized its partnership with Wuhan Orient Lucky Horse (OLH) on 20 June 2006, after Murray Acklin, the then Director of NZ Racing Board representing Thoroughbred Racing, visited Wuhan OLH with the Mayoral Delegation in April 06.

Wuhan Sister City Arts Competition was successfully held at the end of Sept. 2006. Christchurch participant Marcus Patman's work has been appraised as the first award in this Competition.
In April 2006, Wuhan Municipality invited all of its Sister Cities to send to Wuhan some paintings from school kids in their respecitve cities. Christchurch has sent 7 pieces.
Christchurch paintings as a group came third overall in the whole Competition.

Drs Prudence Williams (Research General Manager), Nigel Larsen (Team Leader, Food & Biomaterials Innovation) and Anthony Connor (Senior Scientist in potato research) from Crop & Food visited Huazhong Agricultural University (HAU) from 18 to 20 September 2006. The group were greeted by Prof Xie Conghua, Vice President HAU, and met with HAU scientists and researchers in their own fields. Dr. Connor's seminar on his latest research in potato science was very well received.

Dr Tim Bell from UC revisited HUST again after his July visit. He had some seminars in HUST and also had a very well-received presentation on ‘Unplugged’ to pupils in No. 1 Middle School Attached to CCNU (see http://www.hzsdyfz.com.cn/new.php?id=3305). On 16 August, Garry Moore, Mayor of Christchurch, held a public presentation on Wuhan Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Science in the hope that some of the inspiration may be picked up from the Wuhan Model in the revitalization of our Park and gardens. The presentation was reported on the 'Gardening Colum' (D14) of The Press on 19 August 2006. |

Ms Zhang Zhen, Principal of Number 1 Middle School Attached to Central China Normal University, visited the University of Canterbury (UC) together with 4 other lead teachers from the School from 30 July to 03 August 2006. They were warmly received by Prof Roy Sharp, Vice-Chancellor of UC, and Garry Moore, Mayor of Christchurch. During the visit, the delegation discussed their proposal for the collaboration programmes with UC Opportunities, visited some UC colleges and departments, and had two field trips to two local middle schools observing classess and talking with the teachers and administrators there. Prior to this visit, Ms Marion McEwing, Manager of UC Foundation Studies, visited Number 1 Middle School Attached to Central China Normal University in Wuhan, and a number of top students from this prestigious School will soon come down to UC to further their tertiary education. Number 1 Middle School Attached to Central China Normal University and UC signed a MoU for a range of initiatives on 05 April 2006. |

Dr Tim Bell, Associate Professor from College of Engineering, University of Canterbury (UC), visited College of Computer Science & Technology, Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST) from 03 till 14 July 2006. He met a number of research groups in the College and had several seminars. He has also made significant progress on the two projects that he is personally undertaking with HUST staff and students, and has also identified quite some areas for coloration between UC and HUST. Tim delivered a seminar on this visit in the University of Canterbury on 21 July and he is keen to pass onto his colleagues the information about the areas for future collaboration between the two universities. He was made a Guest Professor for the College on 13 July 2006. Tim is going to HUST again early September 2006. For your information, UC and HUST signed a MoU for Academic Exchange and Cooperation on 06 April 2006. |

A Wuhan Delegation of five people visited Christchurch on 16 May 2006 to identify some opportunities for cooperation between Wuhan and Christchurch as a follow-up to the Christchurch Mayoral Delegation's Visit in Wuhan in April 2006. Mike Bourke, Operations and Maintenance Manager of City Water and Waste Unit, showed the group around the Water Treatment Plant and the Christchurch Metro Plant Refuse Station. The Delegation was favourably impressed with the expertise in Christchurch's management of waste processing, and has expressed a keen interest in collaborating with Christchurch for addressing some of the waste processing and environmental issues in Wuhan. It is expected that one or two joint projects may soon move to the planning stage. The Delegation was headed by Mr. Liu Jiaxiang, Director of Wuhan Municipal City Administration, including Mr. Wu Shirong, Deputy Director of Wuhan Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection, Mr. Cai Jie and Mr. Yu Liangming, Deputy Directors of Jiang'an District and Qingshan District respectively of Wuhan Municipal Government, with Mr. Yonghao (Howard) Cao interpreting from Wuhan Foreign Affairs Office. The International Relations Team of Christchurch City Council has made the on-ground arrangement for this visit from Wuhan. |

A Delegation of five scientists from the College of Computer Science & Technology (CCST) of Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST) recently attended the 2006 New Zealand HIT Lab Consortium Conference from 10 to 14 April 2006. The delegates are: Prof. Lu Yansheng, Deputy Dean, CCST, HUST Prof. Feng Dan, Deputy Dean, CCST, HUST Prof. Wang Tianjiang, Deputy Dean, CCST, HUST Prof. Son Enmin, Director of Centre of Biomedical Imaging & Bioinformatics (CBIB), CCST, HUST Prof. Li Zhitang, Director of Centre of Network & Computer, Head of Department of Computer Security, CCST, HUST Prof. Song made a presentation about CCST, HUST and CBIB research projects, and his talk was well acclaimed. During the visit, the Delegation met Prof. Peter Jackson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Univerisity of Canterbury (UC), and Mark Billinghurst, Director of HITLabNZ, regarding research colloboration. Christchurch Mayoral Delegation visited Wuhan from 04 to 08 April 2006. The Friendship City Agreement has been signed by Mayor Garry Moore and Mayor Li Xiansheng.
