Since 1999, the cities of Christchurch, New Zealand and Wuhan, China have been building the foundations to establish a long-term strategic partnership. On 04 April 2006, the relationship between Christhcurch and Wuhan was formalized when Garry Moore visited Wuhan for the third time with a delegation of 18 people and signed the Friendship City Agreement with Mr Li Xiansheng, Mayor of Wuhan. For more information about the visit, please click the 'Milestones' button on top of the page.

The relationship has developed rapidly in only a short time, and these cities are now working together collaboratively on a range of initiatives at a government level, as well as in business, academic research, and science and technology partnerships.

This website outlines the history and current state of this relationship, and provides an introduction to some of the activities currently being undertaken together.

A detailed strategy was drafted by the two cities in early 2004, which has been highly praised and used extensively in the build up to the Free Trade Agreement negotiations between New Zealand and China.
